Flea-Borne Typhus Outbreak in Pico-Union Prompts Health Warning
Los Angeles County health officials have reported a localized outbreak of flea-borne typhus in the Pico-Union neighborhood, with five people hospitalized this year. The disease, spread by infected fleas, is treatable with antibiotics if diagnosed early. Health officials are urging residents to use flea-control products on pets, avoid contact with stray animals, and maintain clean yards to reduce infection risk. The outbreak is part of a broader increase in flea-borne typhus cases across the county, with a record 220 cases reported in 2025.
