U.S. Semiconductor Industry Faces Critical Shortage of 157,000 Workers by 2030 Amidst AI Boom
The U.S. semiconductor industry is projected to face a significant worker shortfall of up to 157,000 positions by 2030, according to global consulting firm McKinsey and the SEMI Foundation. This impending crisis comes despite a massive demand for memory and storage chips driven by the AI boom and Washington's efforts to reshore semiconductor manufacturing. Major chipmakers like TSMC, Intel, Samsung, Micron, and SK hynix are investing billions in new fabrication plants and facilities across the U.S., including TSMC's Arizona campus, Intel's Ohio One plant, Samsung's Taylor, Texas fab, Micron's Boise, Idaho, and New York megafab, and SK hynix's Indiana HBM plant. However, these ambitious projects are hampered by a lack of skilled engineers and technicians. Only 3% of U.S. engineering graduates enter the semiconductor industry, and 73% of chip companies report difficulty filling engineering roles.
