New Jersey Leads U.S. in Flood Damage Per Square Mile
A recent report by Viles and Beckman LLC highlights that New Jersey has the highest flood damage costs per square mile in the United States. Between 2021 and 2025, the state incurred $31,751 in flood-related damages per square mile, totaling nearly $234 million in property and crop losses across its 7,354 square miles. The data, sourced from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information and the Storm Events Database, underscores the significant financial impact of flooding in the state. While New Jersey ranks first in per-square-mile costs, it is eighth in total flood damage nationwide, with larger states like Florida experiencing higher overall losses.
