Will County Board Approves Large-Scale Solar Farm Amidst Local Opposition
The Will County Board has approved Earthrise Energy's plan for a 6,100-acre solar farm, known as the Pride of the Prairie, in a 12-8 vote. The project, which will span across Green Garden, Wilton, and Manhattan townships, has been a subject of contention, with opposition from local residents who argue that the project is too large and incompatible with the rural character of the area. Concerns have also been raised about the environmental impact of the solar farm, which will include 1 million solar panels and 300,000 galvanized steel posts. Despite these concerns, the project has received support from union leaders who highlight the job creation potential and the contribution to sustainable energy. The solar farm is expected to generate significant property tax revenue and create over 1,000 jobs, including more than 600 construction jobs.
