U.S. Families Face Rising Costs for School Supplies and Lunches Amid Tariffs
As the back-to-school season approaches, U.S. families are expected to spend approximately $4,000 per student on school supplies and lunches this year. This increase is attributed to higher prices for school items and lunches, with a typical basket of school supplies rising by nearly 8% compared to the previous year. The Century Foundation and Groundwork Collaborative report that tariffs on imported goods, which include many school supplies, are a significant factor driving these costs. Additionally, higher gas prices have contributed to increased food and clothing costs. The analysis highlights that families will spend about $175 on school supplies and $3,800 on packed lunches. The rising costs are causing financial strain, with many families considering taking on debt to cover these expenses.
