Saab Unveils Supersonic Loyal Wingman Concept A3-001 for Next-Gen Combat Air Systems
Saab has unveiled a full-scale mock-up of its A3-001 supersonic Loyal Wingman autonomous combat aircraft concept at the Swedish Armed Forces Jubilee Air Show. This development is part of Sweden's official policy to maintain its domestic aerospace technology base, especially after joining NATO. The A3-001 is designed to be supersonic, powered by a General Electric F414 turbofan engine, and will be approximately the size of a JAS 39 Gripen E. Its design incorporates enhanced stealth features, including a tailless blend-wing, cropped compound-delta swept wings, pronounced chine, side air intakes, serrated engine exhaust nozzles, and an internal weapons bay. The aircraft is intended to operate alongside piloted fighters and AWACS planes, carrying precision-guided munitions, air-to-air missiles, and integrated multi-domain sensor suites. The project is on an accelerated development cycle, with a prototype (A1) expected to fly in 2027 to test basic flight characteristics, followed by an A2 demonstrator by 2030 w...
