Strength Training Recommended for GLP-1 Users to Combat Muscle Loss
Individuals using GLP-1 medications, which are increasingly popular for weight loss and managing health conditions, are strongly advised to incorporate strength training into their routines. Exercise physiologist and sports nutritionist Heidi Skolnik emphasizes the importance of compound exercises, such as squats and lunges, which engage multiple joints and muscle groups simultaneously. These exercises are highly efficient and functional, helping to train the body for real-life activities. Skolnik recommends prioritizing large muscle groups like glutes, thighs, chest, and back. The advice comes as GLP-1 medications, while effective for weight loss, can accelerate muscle mass loss, a natural process that also occurs with aging. Starting strength training before or concurrently with GLP-1 medication use is suggested to proactively prevent muscle degradation, as it is easier to maintain muscle than to regain it.
