Chicago's 'Other Washingtons' Project Reimagines Monument Representation
In Chicago, a new art installation titled 'Other Washingtons' has been unveiled in Washington Park on the city's South Side. Conceptualized by artist and architect Amanda Williams, the project surrounds a statue of George Washington with flags depicting notable Black Americans who share the Washington surname. This initiative is part of the Chicago Monuments Project, which aims to address gaps in representation of gender and race in public monuments. The installation features figures such as inventor George Washington Carver and actor Denzel Washington, with the flags and banners rotating annually for three years. The project seeks to create a 'living archive' that reflects community memory and highlights lesser-known stories. The original statue of George Washington, depicting him on horseback, has been a point of contention due to its location in a predominantly Black neighborhood and Washington's history as a slave owner.
