Social Security Administration Error Leads to Underpayment for Thousands of Widows and Widowers
A federal watchdog report has revealed that thousands of widows and widowers were underpaid Social Security benefits due to calculation errors by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The errors, affecting an estimated 8,618 individuals, resulted in a combined loss of over $50 million. The report highlights the failure to apply the Widow(er)s Indexing Computation (WINDEX) correctly, leading to reduced monthly payments. The SSA is expected to review the findings and issue retroactive payments where underpayments occurred.
