India Establishes Five Centers of Excellence for Classical Language Research
The Ministry of Education in India has approved the creation of five new Centres of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to the study, research, and preservation of India's classical languages. These centers will focus on Classical Assamese, Classical Bengali, Classical Marathi, Classical Pali, and Classical Prakrit. Each CoE will be hosted by a different higher education institution across various states. Tezpur University in Assam will house the Centre for Classical Assamese, Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal will focus on Classical Bengali, and Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute in Pune will establish the Centre for Classical Marathi. The Central University of Odisha will host the Classical Pali center, while the Central University of Gujarat will establish the Centre for Classical Prakrit. This initiative aims to bolster academic platforms for advanced research, document and digitize linguistic and literary resources, and promote wider access to these classical language traditions.
