Los Angeles County Public Schools Face Significant Enrollment Decline Amid Broader Statewide Trends
Public schools in Los Angeles County are experiencing a notable decline in student enrollment, reflecting a broader trend across California. The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) reported a decrease of 16,765 students, or 4.5%, for the 2025-26 academic year. This decline is part of a statewide reduction of 1.3%, equating to approximately 75,000 students. Factors contributing to this trend include declining birth rates, high housing costs, reduced immigration, and federal deportation efforts. Despite these challenges, some districts like Elk Grove Unified have seen enrollment increases. The decline in LAUSD is significant as it represents 22.4% of the statewide decrease, despite the district only accounting for 7% of California's public school students.
