The Mamie Clafoutis bakery in Montreal has been vandalized for the second time in three months, following its transition to a self-service model. The bakery, co-founded by Nicolas Delourmel, experienced broken windows and anti-tech graffiti, reflecting resistance to its technological shift. The self-service model, introduced in 2024, allows customers to serve themselves 24/7, a change driven by economic pressures and labor shortages post-pandemic. Despite the vandalism, Delourmel maintains that no jobs were lost due to the transition, although positions in other departments were cut. The bakery has faced accusations of using facial recognition technology, which it denies. The incidents have raised concerns about increased insurance costs, which may affect customer pricing.
