Santa Barbara Zoo Mourns Loss of Red Panda and Cubs
The Santa Barbara Zoo is grieving the loss of a 2-year-old red panda named Ruby, who died shortly after the deaths of her two newborn cubs. Ruby, who had shown signs of distress, was diagnosed with Addison's disease, an endocrine disorder that likely contributed to her decline following the physiological stress of pregnancy and lactation. The zoo had celebrated the birth of the cubs, the first red pandas born there in over 30 years, but both cubs died within weeks due to health complications. The loss is a significant blow to the zoo's conservation efforts for the endangered species.
