Investigation Uncovers Cambodia's Illegal Wildlife Trade Linked to Crime Networks
A report by the U.S.-based NGO Earth League International (ELI) has exposed a thriving illegal wildlife trade in Cambodia, linked to transnational crime networks. The investigation, titled 'Sandokan,' identified five kingpins involved in wildlife smuggling, human and drug trafficking, and scam operations. The report highlights the sale of products made from endangered species, such as tiger bone wine and rhino horns, in shops and restaurants. The trade is facilitated by connections to Cambodian customs officials and political elites, posing a significant threat to wildlife conservation efforts in the region.
