This statement comes in the context of an ongoing discussion about lead ammunition and its impact on wildlife, particularly birds of prey. Lead toxicity is a significant issue, with over three-fourths of birds admitted to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary testing positive for lead. A 2015 study indicated that lead toxicity is an epidemic affecting carnivorous bird populations nationwide. The Minnesota Raptor Center, part of the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine, also reports that the biggest cause of lead toxicity in bald eagles they treat is lead products used in hunting.
