Hurricane Camille: A Look Back at the 1969 Category 5 Storm
Hurricane Camille, one of the most infamous Category 5 hurricanes, formed on August 13, 1969, as a tropical depression in the Caribbean Sea. It rapidly intensified, becoming a Category 5 hurricane with winds exceeding 175 mph (282 km/h) by August 16. Camille made landfall near Waveland, Mississippi, on August 17, 1969, at 11:30 PM CDT, causing widespread devastation. The storm weakened as it moved inland, eventually downgrading to a tropical depression over Tate County, Mississippi, on August 18. Camille brought significant rainfall to the Mid-South, alleviating drought conditions in the region during a particularly dry year.
