Georgia Power's Eminent Domain Use Sparks Controversy Amid Data Center Expansion
Georgia Power is facing criticism for its use of eminent domain to acquire land for a new transmission line intended to support data centers. The utility company argues that the line is necessary due to increased demand that has outpaced the existing grid. The project involves acquiring over 300 parcels, including residential properties, with the majority of homeowners having reached agreements to sell. However, some residents are concerned about the forced sale of their properties, as eminent domain allows the government to take private property for public use with just compensation. Similar issues are arising in other states, such as Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Indiana, where transmission projects are being proposed to support data centers, often leading to disputes over land acquisition.
