Nat Frothingham's 1974 Senate Campaign Against Patrick Leahy Remembered
In 1974, Nat Frothingham, a Massachusetts native who had moved to Vermont three years prior, ran for the U.S. Senate against Patrick Leahy. At the time, Leahy was a Vermont native and the top county prosecutor in the state's largest city. Frothingham's campaign was marked by his call for the impeachment of then-President Richard Nixon and his criticism of the arrogance and abuse of power by those in office. Despite his vigorous campaign efforts, Frothingham was defeated by Leahy, who won by nearly 70 points in the Democratic primary and went on to win the general election against Richard Mallary. Frothingham's campaign materials, which included sentiments about restoring public trust, remain relevant today. His friend, Mason Singer, recalled the campaign as an uphill battle but noted Frothingham's persistence and dedication to public service.
