McLean County Childcare Providers Collaborate Amidst Closures, State Reforms
Childcare providers in Bloomington-Normal, McLean County, are increasingly choosing collaboration over competition as several centers have closed since last winter, displacing numerous families. The abrupt closure of Milestones Early Learning Center and Preschool, which had operated for 118 years, left approximately 80 families with short notice and staff without pay for weeks. This closure is part of a larger trend, exacerbating an already critical shortage of childcare options in the area, with waitlists extending for months or even years. In response, local providers like Molly Robinson of The Farmhouse and Ashley McAfee of Little Jewels Learning Center are working together, sharing information about openings, and advocating for systemic changes. Illinois' new Department of Early Childhood (IDEC) is gradually implementing statewide solutions, including improved data collection for children in foster care and streamlined staff background checks, though these changes are slow to materialize.
