Spring Frost Causes Severe Crop Losses in New York's Finger Lakes Region
Fruit growers in New York's Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions are facing significant challenges after a series of damaging spring frosts. Governor Kathy Hochul has requested a USDA Secretarial Disaster Designation to provide federal assistance to affected counties. The frost followed an unusually warm period that caused early blooming, leaving crops vulnerable to freezing temperatures in April. Key crops impacted include apples, grapes, peaches, plums, cherries, pears, and strawberries. Reports indicate crop losses ranging from 15% to 100%, with estimated economic damages exceeding $30 million statewide. The disaster designation, if approved, would allow farmers to apply for low-interest emergency loans to recover from these losses.
