AI Errors in Legal Filings Raise Concerns in New Mexico Courts
Courts in New Mexico have encountered issues with AI-generated errors in legal filings, known as 'hallucinations,' where AI tools create fake or nonexistent case citations. This phenomenon has been detected in at least seven lawsuits since 2023, affecting both self-represented litigants and attorneys. Judges have expressed concern over the waste of judicial resources and the potential harm to the legal system's reputation. While some cases have resulted in sanctions, others have led to warnings. The New Mexico Supreme Court is considering a formal policy on AI use in the judiciary to address these challenges.
