Germany's Deportation of 137 Nigerians Highlights Migration Policy Challenges
Germany has deported 137 Nigerian citizens through five chartered flights between February and June 2026. These operations were part of a coordinated effort involving several European countries, including Spain, Austria, and Belgium. The deportations were carried out despite some of the individuals having lived in Germany for several years and possessing documentation related to their residence status. Notably, a single mother and her three children were deported from Stuttgart but later returned to Germany after it was confirmed that their deportation was an error. The deportations have raised concerns about the treatment of deportees, particularly those with serious health conditions, and the lack of assistance provided upon their return to Nigeria.
