Democratic Representatives Demand Investigation into Expired Legal Support for Unaccompanied Minors
U.S. Representatives Summer Lee and Chris Deluzio, both Democrats from Pennsylvania, have raised concerns over the expiration of a federal contract that provided legal services to unaccompanied immigrant children. This contract, which expired recently, funded approximately 100 legal groups to assist around 24,000 minors across the United States. The expiration has left these children vulnerable to deportation without legal representation. The representatives have sent a letter to the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary and the Acting Director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, seeking clarification on how the government plans to comply with legal requirements to provide these children with legal services. The situation is further complicated by allegations that the Trump administration has been withholding payments to these legal groups, potentially undermining their financial stability.
