Nancy Pelosi's Endorsement for Successor Faces Challenges in San Francisco Congressional Race
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has endorsed San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan in an effort to secure her long-held congressional seat for a Democrat of her choosing. Pelosi announced her endorsement two weeks prior to California's June primary. However, the effectiveness of Pelosi's influence in the race remains uncertain. Chan is set to face off against another Democrat, far-left state Sen. Scott Wiener, in the November general election, a consequence of California's top-two primary system. Wiener had previously indicated he would not run until Pelosi retired but entered the race last October before her retirement announcement. This timing has led to speculation in San Francisco political circles that Pelosi's strong support for Chan may be partly motivated by frustration with Wiener. Despite Pelosi's reputation as a fundraiser, Chan has raised approximately $1.1 million, significantly less than Wiener's over $4.5 million.
