China's Power Demand Surges Amid Heatwave, Straining Grid
China is experiencing record electricity demand due to a severe heatwave affecting key regions, including the northern, northeastern, and eastern parts of the country. The State Grid Corporation of China, which serves over 1.1 billion people, reported unprecedented grid loads as temperatures soared. Despite the increased demand, no blackouts have been reported, as the grid operator has managed to redirect electricity to meet air-conditioning needs. The heatwave is expected to persist, with temperatures potentially reaching historical highs. In response, the State Grid Corporation plans significant investments to upgrade and expand power transmission and distribution systems, supporting the surge in renewable energy capacity and rising electricity demand.
