Louisiana Supreme Court Upholds Abolition of Exoneree's Elected Office
The Louisiana Supreme Court has upheld the decision to abolish the elected office of Orleans Parish clerk of criminal court, a position won by Calvin Duncan, a New Orleans exoneree. Duncan, who spent nearly 30 years in prison before his conviction was vacated, won the office in a landmark election. However, Republican lawmakers moved to eliminate the position, citing government efficiency. The Court's 4-3 decision has sparked controversy, with dissenting justices arguing that it undermines the will of voters and raises concerns about racial and political motivations.
