Australian Households Face Severe Grocery Cost Increases Amidst Broader Cost-of-Living Crisis
Australian households are experiencing significant financial strain due to rising grocery costs, which are exacerbating a wider cost-of-living crisis. New research by YouGov, commissioned by the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, indicates that 83% of Australians are spending more on groceries than they were a year ago. More than half, 55%, have been forced to cut back on food purchases due to financial pressures. This trend is affecting all income brackets, with even higher-income households feeling the pinch, though those with lower incomes are increasingly relying on charities for support. Food assistance accounted for 73% of the aid provided by Vinnies NSW over the past year, assisting over 106,000 people with $9.7 million in food-related help. Yolanda Saiz, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO, highlighted that many households' budgets have not kept pace with the increased price of essentials, leading to difficult choices, such as parents skipping meals so their children can eat.
