BGE Customers to Comment on Proposed $8 Monthly Rate Hike in Maryland
Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) customers in Maryland will have multiple opportunities to provide feedback on a proposed electric rate increase. BGE is seeking approval from Maryland regulators for a $156.1 million increase in electric base rates. If fully approved, this request is estimated to raise the average residential customer's total electric bill by approximately 4%, or about $8 per month, for those using 851 kilowatt-hours monthly. The Maryland Public Service Commission has temporarily suspended BGE's proposed tariff revisions for an initial 180 days, starting August 1, to thoroughly review the request. BGE stated that the filing aims to support the maintenance of its electric system while attempting to limit the financial impact on customers. The proposal also includes a 'FlexPay' program, which would allow eligible customers to pre-pay for their anticipated energy usage.
