New York Governor Hochul Announces Joint Emergency Water Relief Effort for Puerto Rico Amidst Severe Shortage
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has announced a joint emergency water relief effort to support Puerto Rico, which is currently experiencing a severe water shortage. This initiative, in collaboration with the Afya Foundation, a Westchester-based humanitarian relief organization, and corporate donors, will supply Puerto Rico with 26 pallets of emergency drinking water. This amounts to approximately 5,900 gallons of emergency supplies. The crisis in Puerto Rico has led to an emergency declaration, with over 500,000 residents reportedly without water since April 26. The Governor emphasized New York's commitment to assisting its 'family' in Puerto Rico, highlighting the significant Puerto Rican population residing in New York State. The relief effort is set to begin with the first flight of supplies on Saturday, aiming to address the immediate health risks posed by the lack of access to clean water.
