Severe Weather Hampers Mediterranean Migrant Rescue Efforts
In the Mediterranean Sea near Italy, two merchant vessels have rescued 32 migrants from a capsized boat attempting to cross from Libya to Europe. The incident occurred over the Easter weekend, a time when bad weather has significantly impacted maritime conditions. According to Sea-Watch and Mediterranea Saving Humans, 71 individuals were reported lost at sea, with survivors indicating the boat initially carried 105 passengers. The Italian Coast Guard facilitated the transfer of the rescued individuals to Lampedusa. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has noted that 683 people have died in the central Mediterranean this year, marking one of the highest death tolls since 2014. The adverse weather has been a major factor in limiting departures from North Africa and has posed severe challenges for those attempting the perilous journey.
