Severe Storms Bring Heavy Rain and Cooler Temperatures to Iowa
Central and eastern Iowa experienced intense heat earlier today, with temperatures reaching 98°F (36.7°C) in Des Moines. However, strong storms have moved into the area, bringing significant rainfall and cooler temperatures. Rainfall totals include over 3.5 inches in Polk City and Ames, with some areas reporting up to 4.7 inches. Flash flood warnings are in effect for much of the metro area, including Ames, due to isolated flash flooding risks. Severe thunderstorm warnings remain active for Madison, Warren, and Appanoose counties, with the strongest storm currently near Rathbun Lake. The storms are gradually moving southward and are expected to taper off by midnight in southern Iowa.
