Former Pfizer Building Stabilized After Near Collapse, E. 43rd St. Reopened
E. 43rd St. in Midtown Manhattan has been reopened following a near collapse of a building undergoing conversion from office to residential use. The Department of Buildings (DOB) confirmed that stabilization and facade enclosure work at the former Pfizer headquarters at E. 42nd St. and Second Ave. has been completed, ensuring no significant structural issues remain. The street had been closed for nearly two weeks after two steel support columns buckled inside the 37-story high-rise, leading to evacuations and a halt in construction. The project, which aims to create 1,602 apartments, is the largest office-to-residential conversion in the city's history. A stop-work order remains in effect, pending the results of an ongoing investigation into the structural failure.
