Japan's Noetra Initiative Aims to Lead in Physical AI with Major Investment
Japan is advancing its physical AI capabilities through Noetra, a consortium of 44 major companies, including SoftBank, Sony, NEC, and Honda. This initiative is part of Japan's updated AI Robotics Strategy, which seeks to deploy 10 million AI-powered robots by 2040 to address labor shortages and an aging population. Noetra has received significant government backing, with an initial funding of $2.4 billion and plans for up to $6.15 billion in financial aid over the next five years. The consortium focuses on developing homegrown AI models, particularly in robotics, leveraging Japan's industrial strengths. A 140-megawatt data center is also being constructed to support these efforts, expected to be operational by 2028.
