McClatchy Newspaper Chain Implements Significant Layoffs Across U.S. Publications
The McClatchy newspaper chain has implemented substantial layoffs across 17 of its publications, including prominent titles such as The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee, The Kansas City Star, and The Charlotte Observer. The NewsGuild-CWA, which represents McClatchy journalists, reported that over 90 unionized journalists and media workers were affected, constituting approximately 30 percent of all unionized McClatchy employees. These cuts have led to significant reductions in newsroom staff, with some papers losing critical reporting positions. For instance, The Miami Herald saw 32 job cuts, including the entire writing staff of its Spanish-language publication, El Nuevo Herald.
