Wild West Festival in Ellis County Dissolves After Three Decades Due to Rising Costs and Volunteer Shortages
The Wild West Festival committee has voted to dissolve its nonprofit organization, bringing an end to the annual multi-day summer festival in Ellis County, Kansas, after more than 30 years. This decision follows years of escalating production expenses, increased artist booking fees, and rising staging and security costs. Compounding these financial pressures was a significant challenge in volunteer recruitment, as natural attrition reduced the core team responsible for organizing the large-scale community event. Committee member James Bell stated that continuing under the current operational model risked the integrity of the festival, leading to the difficult choice to conclude its run. The festival, which began in 1995 as a cultural and historical celebration, had gradually shifted towards a high-production, music-centric model, moving away from its original grassroots mission.
