Vietnamese Association of Illinois Celebrates 50th Anniversary, Reflects on Community Evolution and Post-Pandemic Changes
The Vietnamese Association of Illinois (VAI) is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of serving the Vietnamese community in the Chicago area. Founded in 1976 by the first wave of Vietnamese refugees, the organization will host a concert featuring Saigon Jazz Revival and Vietnamese singer Carol Kim. Executive Director Vân Huynh, who began as a volunteer over a decade ago, highlights the association's enduring commitment to mutual aid, a principle established by its refugee founders. The VAI operates on a $10 million budget, offering a range of programs including after-school care, adult education, senior homecare, immigration services, and cultural events. While primarily serving Vietnamese clients, the association has expanded its reach to assist other refugee and immigrant groups, including Spanish-speaking migrant families during Chicago's recent migrant crisis.
