NGOs and Transport Businesses Advocate for Remote Sensing in EU Roadworthiness Package
A coalition of NGOs and transport businesses is urging the European Parliament to maintain remote sensing provisions in the EU Roadworthiness Package. The European Commission's proposal, published in April 2025, included binding requirements for using remote sensing technology to screen vehicle emissions and noise. However, recent amendments aim to remove these targets, which the coalition argues would undermine air quality benefits. Remote sensing technology is effective in detecting high-emitting vehicles, which are responsible for a significant portion of NOx emissions. The coalition emphasizes that removing deployment targets would hinder efforts to improve air quality and protect public health.
