CAR-T Cell Therapy Shows Promise for Autoimmune Disease Treatment
CAR-T cell therapy, originally developed for cancer treatment, is showing promising results in treating autoimmune diseases. Researchers, including Fabian Müller from the University Hospital of Erlangen, have been pioneering this approach, which involves reengineering T cells to target and eliminate misbehaving B cells responsible for autoimmune attacks. Early trials have shown that many patients with conditions like lupus, myositis, and systemic sclerosis have gone into remission after treatment. Despite the high cost and limited access in the U.S., CAR-T therapy offers a potential breakthrough for patients with severe autoimmune diseases, providing hope for long-term remission.
