Mayor Bowser Opposes City-Funded Dome at Audi Field Amidst Capital One Arena Upgrades
Mayor Muriel Bowser has expressed opposition to a D.C. Council plan that would provide city funding for a dome at Audi Field, the home stadium of D.C. United. This stance comes as Capital One Arena, where the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards play, is already undergoing city-funded upgrades. Mayor Bowser has been a proponent of these upgrades, actively engaging with Ted Leonsis, the owner of the Capitals and Wizards, who had previously shown interest in moving his teams to Virginia. According to City Cast’s Jaclyn Peiser, Bowser stated that she does not want to detract from the ongoing investments in Capital One Arena. D.C. United has countered this position, arguing that many cities successfully support multiple sports arenas and that Washington D.C. should not lag behind other cities in its commitment to being a sports and entertainment capital.
