House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington, a Republican from Texas, is advocating for a balanced budget amendment as a solution to the United States' escalating national debt, which is nearing $40 trillion. Arrington argues that both political parties have failed to manage fiscal responsibility, leading to a national debt per GDP that surpasses World War II levels. He emphasizes that the current annual deficit exceeds both defense and non-defense discretionary budgets, with significant portions of borrowed funds going towards interest payments. Arrington believes that a balanced budget amendment would enforce fiscal discipline on Congress, which he claims has lacked the political will to address the debt crisis. The amendment would require approval by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of state legislatures.
