Tick Prevention Tips for Your Yard This Season in Baton Rouge
Ticks are becoming an increasing concern in backyards, not just in wooded or hiking areas, according to Consumer Reports. These pests thrive in tall grass, damp, and shaded areas, making yard maintenance a critical step in reducing their presence. Recommendations include mowing grass to a height of about 3 inches, bagging clippings in tick-prone areas, and clearing away leaf piles and brush. Additionally, creating a three-foot barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas can help deter ticks. Deer and mice, common tick carriers, can be discouraged with tall fences and bait boxes designed to kill ticks without harming the animals. Personal precautions, such as wearing protective clothing and using EPA-approved insect repellents, are also advised when working in the yard or venturing outdoors.
