BAE Systems Secures $16 Million GPS Contract with Collins Aerospace for Naval Systems Upgrade
BAE Systems has been awarded a $16 million contract to upgrade the Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) for the U.S. Navy. This contract involves integrating M-Code technology into the encrypted GPS navigation system, which is crucial for guiding aircraft to safe landings on aircraft carriers in all weather conditions. The upgrade aims to reduce pilot workload and enhance operational capability. BAE Systems acquired Collins Aerospace’s military GPS business unit in 2020 and operates a $139 million classified defense aerospace facility in Cedar Rapids, where work on military GPS products is performed. Molly O’Brien, program manager for Airborne GPS at BAE Systems, stated that this award marks a significant milestone in modernizing JPALS, ensuring warfighters maintain a decisive operational advantage against evolving threats.
