Chris Brown's Former Housekeeper Accepts $9.5 Million Settlement in Dog Attack Case
Maria Avila, Chris Brown’s former housekeeper, has agreed to accept a $9.5 million settlement in a 2020 dog attack case. This decision comes after Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Huey P. Cotton reduced her original jury award of $12.9 million, deeming it excessive. Avila formally accepted the reduced amount rather than proceeding with another trial solely focused on damages. The incident occurred on December 12, 2020, at Brown’s Tarzana home, where Avila reported being attacked by one of the singer’s dogs, resulting in severe physical and emotional trauma. Judge Cotton found insufficient evidence to support claims of extensive permanent nerve damage and the initial amount for future pain and suffering, but acknowledged ongoing emotional distress, humiliation, shame, embarrassment, and some persistent nerve pain. Avila's sister, Patricia, also received $885,000 from the jury for emotional distress, an award that Judge Cotton did not reduce.
