University of Kentucky Researchers Discover New Alzheimer's Sleep Loss Mechanism
Researchers at the University of Kentucky have identified a new mechanism contributing to sleep loss in Alzheimer's disease. The study, led by Shannon L. Macauley, Ph.D., and Nicholas J. Constantino, Ph.D., found that microglia, the brain's immune cells, are the primary drivers of sleep disruption in an animal model of Alzheimer's. By using a drug to temporarily eliminate most of these cells, the researchers were able to restore over two hours of sleep per day in the affected animals. This discovery challenges the previous understanding that sleep loss was mainly due to damaged neurons or amyloid plaques, suggesting instead that a broader immune response is responsible.
