China Leads Global Mineral Fuel Production, Highlighting Coal's Dominance
China has emerged as the world's largest producer of mineral fuels, producing 4.8 billion metric tons in 2024, which accounts for 28.6% of global output. This production is primarily driven by steam coal and coking coal. The United States follows as the second-largest producer with 2.28 billion metric tons, or 13.5% of the global total, with a production mix dominated by petroleum and natural gas. The ranking, based on physical production rather than value, highlights the influence of high-volume commodities like coal. This has resulted in coal-heavy economies ranking higher than some of the world's largest oil and gas producers.
