Pew Survey Reveals 8% of U.S. Adults Report Having No Close Friends, Highlighting Social Network Dynamics
A 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 8% of U.S. adults reported having no close friends. This statistic reflects broader trends in social networks, which tend to contract with age and life transitions. The survey, which included 5,057 U.S. adults, also revealed that 53% of respondents reported having between one and four close friends, while 38% reported having five or more. The findings suggest that social networks change with age and circumstance, with life events such as entering the workforce, becoming a parent, or losing a spouse impacting the size and nature of one's social network.
