Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky has addressed rumors regarding a special election to fill a potential U.S. Senate vacancy due to Senator Mitch McConnell's prolonged absence. McConnell has been hospitalized since June 11 following a fall, and his absence has sparked speculation about a special election. Beshear clarified that August 3 holds no legal significance for calling such an election. Secretary of State Michael Adams confirmed that there is no deadline on August 3, emphasizing that the governor has no authority to appoint a federal officeholder without a vacancy. McConnell's absence has impacted legislative efforts, as he serves on several key committees. The race for his Senate seat is already underway, with U.S. Rep Andy Barr as the GOP nominee endorsed by President Trump, and Charles Booker running for the Democrats.
