Hazel Park After-Prom Shooting Suspect Released Following Self-Defense Claim
Hazel Park police have released a suspect involved in a fatal shooting at an after-prom party, citing evidence of self-defense during an alleged robbery. The incident occurred at a short-term rental property, where a 20-year-old Detroit man was killed, and a 19-year-old Pontiac woman was injured. The suspect, a 21-year-old man, was initially taken into custody but was released after police reviewed witness accounts and evidence, which suggested the deceased had pointed a gun and stolen a watch from someone at the party. The suspect, who has a valid firearm permit, claimed to have fired in self-defense. The property owner expressed shock and sadness over the incident, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for illegal activities.
