AI Data Centers Linked to Localized Heat Increases, Study Finds
Recent research highlights a concerning environmental impact of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, which are significantly raising local land temperatures. These facilities, essential for running AI systems like ChatGPT and image generators, generate substantial heat due to their massive computing power. According to a study led by Andrea Marinoni from the University of Cambridge, areas surrounding data centers have experienced temperature increases averaging 2°C (3.6°F), with some extreme cases reaching up to 9.1°C (16.4°F). The heat effects can extend up to 10 kilometers from the facilities. The study analyzed satellite temperature data over 20 years, focusing on over 8,400 data centers worldwide. The findings suggest that the rapid expansion of data centers, driven by growing AI demands, could exacerbate this issue, potentially affecting millions of people globally.
