North Carolina DMV Launches Mobile ID Program for Digital Driver's Licenses
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) has introduced a Mobile ID program, offering residents a secure digital version of their driver's license or state ID on their smartphones. This initiative aims to provide citizens with greater control over their identity, enhancing privacy and convenience. The mobile ID is legally equivalent to a physical driver's license under North Carolina law and is designed to meet federal security requirements and international standards for digital ID issuance, protection, sharing, and verification. Users maintain control over when and what information they share, with the NCDMV explicitly stating it cannot track the usage of the mobile ID. The program emphasizes that mobile IDs are optional, and physical driver's licenses will continue to be accepted.
